The Public Works Department’s mission is to provide safe and well-maintained public infrastructure for all citizens while promoting responsible stewardship of resources.
The American Public Works Association in 2015 recognized the Shawnee Public Works Department as the 105th department in the nation to receive full accreditation.

The Public Works Department has normal staff eight hours per day, Monday through Friday, except on holidays.
The Public Works Department provides emergency response 24-7 throughout the year.
Public Works Administration is responsible for providing professional leadership and executing the policies and priorities for the Department. The division of Administration is comprised of support staff for the Department whose primary functions are providing support for all divisions. The division of Administration also includes:
Field Operations is responsible for all public maintenance activities including pavement repairs, curb, gutter and sidewalk repairs, storm water drainage repairs, snow and ice control, right-of-way maintenance, street sweeping, inspection of signs, pavement markings, streetlights, flashing beacons, and traffic signals.
