Floodplain Mapping and Flood Insurance
Shawnee has several major creeks and streams which drain large watersheds. During major rainfall events, these streams may flood and threaten surrounding properties. The current Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) became effective on August 3, 2009 and identify areas within Shawnee that are prone to flooding during a 1% annual chance flood event.
Because Shawnee participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, federally backed flood insurance is available for all properties in the City. You do not need to be in the floodplain to be eligible. The City recommends that all property owners evaluate the potential for surface water flooding of their property and the benefits of obtaining flood insurance.
The City has a Class 7 rating which provides a 15% discount for flood insurance if you are located in the floodplain and 5% if you are not in the floodplain.
